The Bohorok River runs through Bukit Lawang village and is a popular gathering place for locals and tourists. Thousands of locals visit on public holidays just to swim in the river, enjoy their picnic lunch, before returning to Medan.
Western visitors can also enjoy swimming in the Bohorok river. Good places to swim include outside the Sibayak hotel where there is a rock popular with local children for jumping into the river, and at the camping ground, half-way up the river, which normally has fewer people than locations further down stream.
There can be rocks and strong currents in the river, so it is a good idea to check if others are swimming before just jumping in.
There are also many opportunities for river activities. These include the so-called tubing (or tube rafting) one of the main attractions on the Bohorok River.Improvised rafts are made up of large tubes or inflated truck tires, skilfully navigated by experienced local guides. Tubing is a fun and incredibly adrenaline-filled adventure that lets you return to the village after a full day of jungle exploration. You can rent these big tubes at any time in the village and enjoy the river on your own. Gabrijela1972 video.
