Let’s set ready to travel with me “a time machine” to visualize a brief history of Fort Jesus, Mombasa Kenya.
Let’s welcome you all a city established in 900 AD. This is the city known as rich trading town for IRON, Ivory, and gold in collaboration with other kingdom .Portuguese Omani & later British have ruled the city. But Portuguese has ruled the city for longer period of time.
Very interesting fact, 1497 , when vasco da gama sailed with his 4 ship along with his 3 interpreter to discover the world , he was the first Portuguese landed in this city and discover that this route in Indian ocean would be very prosperous for trading.
Let’s introduce the ancient city, located in East Africa in Kenya, the city coastline bordering with Indian Ocean, the only international sea port, & biggest port of East Africa located in this city. - It’s Mombasa. Its original Arabic name is Manbasa. In Kiswahili, it is called "Kisiwa Cha Mvita", which means "Island of War" due to the many changes in its ownership.
We have arrived at 428 yrs old fort Jesus was built between 1593 and 1596, by order of King Philip I of Portugal, to guard the Old Port of Mombasa, the old port is located just next to the fort. Fort Jesus is an example of Renaissance architecture, implemented for the first time of outside Europe, This also used as prison/jail, Swahili state in different time set by different ruler. Fort Jesus was declared a national park in 1958, and in 2011, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and highlighted as one of the most outstanding and well-preserved examples of 16th-century of Portuguese military fortifications.
